Web Glossary


If you are fairly new to the internet, you may have wondered what some of the terms mean. Below is a list of the most common ones.


Web Glossary

ADSL
Asymmetric digital subscriber line – High-speed Internet connection.

ATTACHMENT
An additional document, spreadsheet, video etc sent with e-mail.

BROWSER
The software you use on your computer to view the Internet e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

CD-ROM
Compact disc used for storing data.

DOMAIN
A unique name that identifies a website (e.g. webage.co.uk)

DOWNLOAD

To receive data e.g. programs, pictures etc. sent via the Internet.


DVD

Digital versatile disc – CD’s big brother can store much more information and movies.

E-MAIL
Messages that are sent over the Internet using a mail client such as outlook.

HARDWARE
Equipment – e.g. your computer, keyboard, mouse, monitor.

HOME PAGE
The page that loads when you first call up your Internet browser.

HTML
Hyper text mark-up language – One of the computer codes used to create web pages.

INTERNET
Global network of computers and servers able to exchange information

ISDN
Integrated services digital network – Fast Internet connection, but not as fast as ASDL or fibre optic.

ISP
Internet service provider – Company that provides access to the Internet e.g. webage.co.uk.

LINK
A highlighted part of a website, document or e-mail when clicked directs you to another web page.

LAPTOP
A small portable computer.

MP3
Compressed digital music file, which is very common on the Internet.

MACS
Computers which are from Apple and use their own operating system, MAC OS.

MODEM
Device that connects a computer to the Internet via a telephone connection.

NOTEBOOK
A small portable computer.

ONLINE
Connected to the Internet.

PC
Personal computer.

PERIPHERALS
Hardware other than the computer e.g. mice, printers.

PGP
Pretty Good Privacy. Encryption standard for secure email

PHP
Personal Home Page. Another of the computer codes used to create web pages.

SEARCH ENGINE
Tool that helps you to find web pages using keyword searches.

SMS
Short message service – Standard for sending text messages from mobile phones.

SSL
Secure Socket Layer. Standard Encryption method for secure servers.

SOFTWARE
Programs that tell computers how to perform certain functions.

STREAMING
Images or sound that is played continuously as it is fed into the computer.

URL
Uniform resource locator – Website’s full address, a URL is displayed in the address bar of your browser when viewing a website.

WAP
Wireless application protocol – Text based version of the web for mobile phones.

WEBCAM
Camera that can transmit images via the Internet.

WWW
World wide web – Part of the Internet designed in graphical pages, indexed and linked.
